​​Laboratores provide a wide range of tests to aid physicians and nurse practitioners in the determination of overall health status as well as the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The extent of laboratory testing varies in the different laboratory locations; however some requirements are standard to all laboratories:

 

  • Laboratory testing is done only with a physician or nurse practitioner's request
  • Some testing requires the patient to fast.  That means nothing to eat or drink for 10 – 12 hours before you go to the laboratory.  When in doubt, ask your physician or nurse practitioner or call the laboratory whether fasting is required
  • To determine the correct dosage of medication you are taking it is sometimes necessary to collect the blood specimen at a certain time.  Once again, check with your physician, nurse practitioner or laboratory regarding the time that you should report for your blood test.
  • Some tests require specific patient preparation.  In this case the laboratory will give you specific instructions and you may be required to return at another time.
