Kelvington Capital Project
In February of 2009, the provincial government announced replacement of the Kelvindell Lodge was among 13 capital projects approved through the governments
Ready for Growth initiative. The Ministry of Health approved a shift in the scope of the Kelvington long term care project to an integrated facility in July 2012 to address the unique needs of the population of the community.
The Kelvington capital project will see the replacement of the existing and aged Kelvington Hospital through renovation and expansion of the existing Kelvindell Lodge. The shift in project scope decreased capital costs, making the project more affordable for municipal partners while addressing the unique needs of the community.
Construction of the integrated facility presented KTHR with the opportunity to shift to a new and innovative model of care, utilizing a Primary Health Care (PHC) approach while creating efficiencies in service delivery, staffing and physical space. PHC seeks to improve the health of the population in a team-based approach involving community members and service providers working together. The integrated facility will also allow a patient and family-centred approach to care delivery, utilizing a single point of access for medical clinic visits, acute and emergency care, community health services and long term care.
In September 2014, the Ministry of Health formally approved awarding the project tender to Humboldt Lumber Mart. Site preparation and construction began soon after and a sod turning was held on October 24, 2014. The project is expected to be complete by the spring of 2017. The provincial government will contribute $12 million, or 20 percent of the total cost of the $15 million capital project. Local municipal partners will fund the remaining 20 per cent. The new facility will replace the Kelvington Hospital and offer 45 long-term care beds, seven acute care beds and seven multi-purpose patient rooms for primary care.
The first phase of the capital project involved construction of the new addition to include acute and emergency care, primary health care and community health services as well as renovations to the south wing of Kelvindell Lodge. Phase one was completed on May 1, 2016 and the new Kelvington & Area Hospital officially opened its doors on June 1, 2016. Phase two involves the renovation of the existing kitchen and half of the dining area at Kelvindell Lodge and renovation of the east wing. It is expected to be complete by October 2016. Phase three (renovation of the other half of the dining area and the front entrance of Kelvindell Lodge) and phase four (renovation of the dementia wing) will follow with an expected completion date for the entire project in March 2017.
